A running hat is a versatile accessory to keep in your arsenal, and it can serve a range of functions. From providing cooling comfort and sun protection to offering extra warmth and visibility, a hat is a great companion on your outdoor runs. Here at Running Warehouse, we carry a wide selection of running hats to accommodate sizing, functionality, and personal style. Let's look at the specific characteristics of running hats to help you discover which one is right for you.

#1: Fit

First thing first, look for a hat that has superior adjustability to complement the shape of your head and hair length. Whether your head is on the smaller or larger side, or you have a buzz cut (or wear a low/high ponytail), running hats are constructed with a wide range of adjustable closures to cater to your unique size and needs for a personalized fit. The two most common closures are velcro and plastic snapbacks, which work well universally, no matter the length of your hair. Other forms of hat closures include buckle, back clasp, hook and loop, and toggle cinch-cords. The "best" hat closure depends on your personal preference and comfort, but all offer a secure, customized fit. Note: women's running hats do run smaller than men's to accommodate a women's smaller head circumference.

#2: Breathability

When the temps start to climb, you will want a cap with excellent ventilation and moisture-wicking properties. Look for ultra-lightweight fabric and laser-cut perforations to help keep you cool when the heat is on. Running hats are specially designed with moisture-wicking material, pulling sweat away from your skin, and many have a sweatband-like liner that allows perspiration to evaporate more easily. This feature is also helpful on cold-weather runs to keep you dry.

For the minimalist runner, visors offer lightweight, cooling comfort and ultimate breathability with their open-top construction. Meanwhile, their curved front bill reduces the sun's glare from your eyes and keeps the sweat from trickling down your face. It is important to note that visors are not ideal under prolonged sun exposure, especially for those without hair (as sunburn would be of growing concern).

Trucker running hats are another great cooling option, providing a highly breathable open mesh back panel with quick-drying capabilities. A popular style on the trail, trucker hats come with either a flat or pre-curved brim for offering some shade. Meanwhile, traditional performance caps usually have side perforations for ventilation and provide more sun protection with covered fabric on the back instead of mesh paneling.

#3: Reflectivity

When running in dim, low-light conditions, you will need to add extra reflectivity to your run with a hi-vis running cap. A hat is a great place to incorporate reflectivity because it’s situated high up on your body and easily seen by passing motorists. Most running hats have reflective elements featured on the front brim, sides, or back for added safety and visibility. Several hats are also designed with noticeably bright, bold colors to help you stand out.

#4: Sun Protection

While most running hats offer some buffer from harsh UV rays, for the ultimate in sun protection, bucket hats and drape style hats provide extra head, ear, and neck coverage on hot weather runs. Bucket hats are designed with a 360-degree shaded brim and have mesh elements to keep you cool when running under the grueling hot sun. For outdoor adventures and ultra races, drape hats are a popular staple in shielding the sun on those long trail runs by providing additional back of neck and ear coverage. Some drape hats may feature a pocket to stash ice cubes, keeping you cool in extreme heat, and offer a removable cape to help you regulate your temperature.

#5: Insulation

Conversely, when temperatures dip, beanies and thermal headbands provide added warmth while keeping you dry and are made from stretch fabric for an adaptable fit. Beanies provide extra insulation by protecting your forehead and ears and offer maximum head coverage. Some running beanies may feature an opening or "exit" in the back so you can still rock a ponytail. An alternative option is a thermal headband, which offers comfortable protection from the wind and frigid cold. Especially for those with longer hair or bangs, headbands will keep any flyaway strands off your face for a distraction-free run.

Several beanies and headbands also have reflective yarns or elements to keep you visible; especially, on those dimly-lit winter mornings. Check out our selection of beanies and headbands that are made from soft fleece material, spandex, acrylic, polyester, or Merino wool to keep you comfy, cozy, and dry on cold-weather runs.
