The Altra Rivera is a lightweight and responsive performance trainer that offers versatile cushioning in a zero drop package.

The brand new Altra Rivera is a lightweight trainer that is simple and ready for any run. This shoe offers responsive cushioning that is protective enough for everyday runs while maintaining the zero drop platform and roomy toe box that Altra fans love. The Rivera has Altra's classic "Slim" foot shape which is the slimmest fitting option but still offers enough room for natural toe splay.

What You'll Love

  • A layer of responsive, resilient foam
  • Foot-shape toe box for a natural feel
  • Strategic rubber on the outsole

The Altra Rivera is perfect for runners that want a lightweight option but still need protection from the road underfoot. Altra added a plush layer of their responsive AltraEGO cushioning, kept the upper simple, and strategically placed rubber on the outsole for durability without the added weight. This creates a lightweight shoe that can handle daily miles as well as faster paced runs.

Comments: I'd heard great things about Altra and have worn zero drop shoes before, even some with a negative drop, but these caused my shins to hurt. Not sure just what was the problem but they didn't work for me.  Also, the cushioning was a bit disappointing.  Some of their other models have even less and I thought that this might have what I needed but it didn't.
So, maybe it's just my finicky feet, but they just didn't work for me.

Unlike the Altra Torin Plush 4.5, this shoe was a bit awkward to step into. I was looking forward to  this shoe as a faster, more streamlined approach to Altra's wide toe box, but unfortunately, the insole felt steeped and not very comfortable. Shoe was true to size and I do love the brand.

I like a running shoe that is a little more firm and not too squishy. My last pair were the Solstice. I was not 100% sure when I first tried the Vieras on, and usually when that happens I just give them a try. I have not really gone wrong with any pair of Altras, and I have about 6 now. Also, they have that tech that is supposed to form to your foot or something like that... anyway, a few short runs in and I am in like with them. More foot protection than the Solstice, which is great. A little chunky around the heel, but I can live with it. I got used to the airy feel of the Solstice mesh so I just go with a lighter pair of socks. Overall, I am happy with the purchase.

This is an update from my Feb. 10th review. I ordered a half size larger than I usually wear and the length was then good, but I noticed what another reviewer stated. There is something weird about the fit of this shoe. I also felt arch pain just standing up in the shoe and walking around the house. I continue to be disappointed by the fact that Altra is giving less room for natural toe splay. I look forward to the next version of Rivera if some improvements are made.

I want to love these but I don't. I'm still looking for a replacement for the Intuition that Altra discontinued. The Riveras do not have a wide toebox, which is one of the hallmarks of Altra. Despite this issues, the shoes might be comfortable if they didn't have a weird midsole shape. What is the purpose of the rise on the lateral midsole of the shoe? It positions the head of the fifth metatarsal on a very uncomfortable slope. I had discomfort on the outside/underside of my foot that quickly turned to pain after just walking around the house in these shoes. Look at the photo of the shoe's outside view to see what I mean. That obvious rise in the midsole foam is a no-go.

: Ordered a pair from Altra and found that it ran about a half size short for me, compared to Torin, Escalante and Provision. The tongue is really thick and the heel, though it felt loose, was also thicker than the other 3 models I just named. I also found the toe box to have much lower volume or height, but am going to try a size larger to see if that keeps my toes from rubbing the top of the shoe. I'd love to have an Altra shoe with more EGO softness and rebound.
