The Altra Timp 4 is built to handle almost any distance on the trails. With a new EgoMax midsole, the Timp now has a premium foam compound underfoot that not only protects the legs but also helps to efficiently bounce runners through any trail. The MaxTrac outsole offers claw-like grip on a variety of surfaces, and the flex grooves carved into the rubber give this shoe an adaptable ride on everything from rocky trails to smooth fire roads. Finished off with a breathable knit upper, the Timp 4 features a "Standard" foot shape which is right in the middle of the "Original" and "Slim" options for a secure midfoot fit with a slightly roomier toe box. Comments: Just got these, solid shoe. A little less vertical volume in the toebox compared to LP6 or Olympus, and not as wide but it's all about sock choice as a result. Stay thin and it's fine. Good sturdy mesh; there are some loose strings on teh inside of the tongue (QC folks, come on) but at least the tongue is comfortable. Plush upper/heel counter, stays locked down, no slippage. EGOMax is interesting but not exactly what I'd call bouncy or a super-foam. Just comfortable. MaxTrac and it's alright, but no Vibram. Pretty flexible shoe though from road to trail and beyond, not sure I'd take it on really sharp camber or technical trails as the heel seems a little tall and narrow. We'll see - very pleased so far and a better fit and feel for me vs. the Mont Blanc.

Comments: I've put about 100 miles on these and I LOVE THEM! My longest run was 35 miles and they felt great the entire time. Pros: Solid build Stable Great lockdown on the heel Look good Breathable Cons: Haven't found any yet!

Comments: I think it's a solid upgrade in every way to the Timp 3 except the width and colors. I wish these came in wide like the Lone Peak 6. These feel considerably tighter than the Timp 3, which were already more narrow than their predecessors. Altra keeps reducing the roominess of their trademark toe box. As for the colors, every color is atrocious, which is sad because in contrast the Lone Peak range always have the best colors and design. My new Lone Peak 6 black/red is one of the most attractive running shoes I've owned, whereas my blue/silver Timp 4 looks like a child's crayon project.

Comments: My first trail run today and really like them. I have used every version of the Timp and so far like this one the best. I rotate the Timp with Nike Kiger. I like a low-profile shoe with some cushion and is not tight as I do have foot pain which is why I started using Altra/Timp. I used the Peregrine but for me, it was too stiff and hard and hurt my foot too much. This version of Timp is very cushioned but stable. I did a 5 mile run in the mud and wet grass and didn't slip and my feet still felt "dry" even though my shoes were soaked. I thought I would slow down because of the cushion, but splits didn't suffer. I did feel some rubbing on the outer edge of the foot/shoe because the foot is not the wide version Altra offers, but to be honest, I can live with that for the stability, if not too much. No shoe is a magic bullet for all your aches and pains and your mind getting distracted and slipping, but these do the job: I can see them working out just fine.
