What's New
The previous EvoRide received mixed reviews in its debut, inspiring ASICS to make multiple updates to enhance version 2. The biggest change is in the shoe's midsole with the introduction of a new FLYTEFOAM blend which is softer and more protective without losing the EvoRide's characteristically fast feel. The upper of the EvoRide 2 is also updated, now providing a more spacious overall fit that better accommodates runners with different foot shapes.
The Bottom Line
ASICS has greatly improved the EvoRide in version 2. The new FLYTEFOAM midsole is now lighter and softer, providing increased levels of protection without losing the EvoRide's signature quicker feel. The forefoot rocker design delivers a highly efficient ride that transitions runners smoothly from heel to toe, although the shoe's unique design could be intrusive for runners who prefer a less aggressive midsole rocker. The EvoRide 2 excels during tempo runs when paces are quicker but it also has the versatility to tackle long-distance runs with ease. That said, our testers noted that the EvoRide 2 is best for runs under half-marathon distances. The EvoRide's engineered mesh upper has also been modified and now delivers a more spacious and comfortable overall feel. This improved fit is also much better suited for a variety of foot shapes. Lockdown is a non-issue while wearing the EvoRide 2s, as these performance trainers will remain secure no matter what you throw at them. Finally, at only $120, the EvoRide 2 delivers an impressive level of quality given its accessible price.

Our In-Depth Look
Shoe Softness i
The ASICS EvoRide 2 is noticeably more cushioned than its predecessor and offers a balanced underfoot feel. These lightweight trainers are not the softest shoes, and those who like a plush midsole may not enjoy the EvoRide 2's firm responsiveness. That said, the updated midsole is greatly improved and will make for many comfortable miles depending on your unique preferences.
Jonathan: "The EvoRide 2 sits right in the middle between soft and firm. If it does lean to a side, it leans firm. It feels softer than the original EvoRide, but I still would not call this shoe plush."

Ride/Energy Return i
The FLYTEFOAM midsole is new in the EvoRide 2, offering a firm and responsive ride that performs wonderfully over a variety of runs. This shoe also features a pronounced rocker geometry, which is not quite as aggressive as the rocker in the GlideRide 2 but could still be too prominent for some. The midsole foam and geometry combine to provide smooth heel-to-toe transitions that pop at toe-off and heighten the overall versatility of these lightweight trainers.
Jonathan: "The EvoRide 2 responded well to faster inputs without feeling like it wasted much energy. It allowed me to feel quick on my feet during tempo runs and intervals."

Underfoot Protection i
Criticized for its harsh underfoot feel and lack of protection, the original EvoRide's versatility was a bit limited. The improved EvoRide 2 is outfitted with a higher stack height, as well as a softer midsole foam, so version 2 is now notably more protective. With this added level of protection and the shoe's responsive midsole, the EvoRide 2 can be used comfortably for short-distance runs at faster paces just as capably as long-haul efforts up to a half marathon.
Jonathan: "While many lightweight shoes are moving toward a disconnected road feel, the EvoRide 2 gives just enough ground feel that you know what is happening underfoot. It has enough cushioning for 60- to 70-minute runs but performs best during sub-hour efforts."

Underfoot Flexibility i
Similar to its ASICS Ride relatives, the EvoRide 2 is a fairly rigid shoe. The forefoot rockered shape helps create smooth and efficient transitions, and the shoe's slight flexibility adds an extra snap at toe-off. In other words, the shoe's lack of flexibility does not take away from its enjoyably polished ride.
Jonathan: "The EvoRide 2 uses GUIDESOLE technology which creates a rocker shape, with a stiffer forefoot. The benefit of this design was very apparent, as the shoes felt super smooth."

Upper Feel i
The updated engineered mesh upper is lightweight with excellent breathability. The EvoRide 2 has a broader fit compared to version 1 and is much more accommodating for various foot shapes. The heel lockdown is fantastic in the EvoRide 2 and can be trusted to keep wearers secure no matter the pace.
Jonathan: "The midfoot fit is slightly lower volume but feels like a true medium width. It may not work for people with very high insteps, but otherwise, it should be quite adaptable. The heel fit was secure, and the forefoot had a universal fit common among many ASICS shoes."

Individual Thoughts

I tested the original EvoRide and really liked it, especially for faster runs, but I thought it lacked the cushioning necessary for comfortable slower-paced runs. The EvoRide 2 is more versatile than the original and is a highly functional shoe for an assortment of training runs. I need more protection for runs longer than 90 minutes, but the shoe was comfortable for shorter durations. The midsole doesn't have the responsiveness I would like for 5K speeds, however, a 10K pace was the EvoRide 2's sweet spot. This shoe compares favorably to the Saucony Kinvara but is not as lively as shoes like the Skechers GOrun Razor+ or New Balance Rebel v2. Regardless, the EvoRide 2's super smooth ride is one I enjoyed, and many other runners will too.
