What's New

The ASICS Gel Kayano is one of the brand's most iconic running shoes in its history, and version 29 of this max-stability daily trainer is loaded with innovative updates that continue to enhance this shoe's performance.

Newly added FLYTEFOAM BLAST PLUS (FF BLAST PLUS) foam steals the headline in this update, promising more protective landings with a more robust energy return that helps make longer daily runs more enjoyable. Similarly notable, the new GEL Kayano 29 has an all-new LITETRUSS™ stability system, which ditches the traditional posting design for seamless support that overpronators will fall in love with, all without sacrificing the shoe's forgivingly smooth ride. With updated foam and new LITETRUSS™ technology, the GEL Kayano has also had a weight change and is approximately 10g lighter than its predecessor.

The shoe's engineered mesh upper remains, more or less, untouched in version 29, delivering a comfortably familiar feel that balances adaptability and structure to produce a reliably secure wrap that should remain irritation-free even on your longest runs. The Kayano 29's re-tooled outsole now features an AHARPLUS heel plug that improves the shoe's already highly respected durability, and max stability trainers will always be ready for more miles as one of the category's most durable options.

The Bottom Line

The max stability daily trainer category has developed a lot in recent years, with numerous innovations focused on delivering systems that can provide top-level support for even the worst overpronators without uncomfortably disrupting their gait cycle. The new ASICS GEL Kayano 29 does just that, and the shoe's FF BLAST™ PLUS foam midsole with LITETRUSS™ stability thoroughly impressed our team throughout testing!

The shoe's lighter, more sleek design delivers a super smooth, highly protective running experience that is perfect for daily training runs, especially when you want to simply cruise and enjoy the run. The FF BLAST™ PLUS improves the Kayano's underfoot comfort while adding a hint of responsiveness that keeps things from feeling sluggish. Despite the midsole's new energy return, the Kayano 29 is still best for more casual daily runs and will not be the best option for more speed-specific training days. Furthermore, if a super long, marathon-level run is on the schedule, then there are more protective shoes better suited for those daunting distances.

The LITETRUSS™ stability system is another update that needs highlighting in the new Kayano 29, as it helps reduce the shoe's weight and provides quality support that is much smoother on the run than any other stability system previously used in the Kayano series. Furthermore, with its all-new smoothed-out design, the Kayano 29 can better accommodate a broader range of runners who struggle with different levels of over overpronation. It is even a suitable option for the neutral runner who wants a little extra support from their daily running shoe.

The AHAR+ outsole improves the GEL Kayano's durability, and testers did not notice any significant signs of wear throughout their testing runs. Additionally, the outsole's reconfigured layout helps further improve the shoe's newly smoothed-out heel-to-toe transition. The shoe's irritation-free engineered mesh upper ends this review on a high note, as it delivers a familiar Kayano feel that provided our testing team with dependable comfort day in and day out. Kayano lovers everywhere will fully appreciate this update from ASICS, but all runners who need a max stability shoe for daily training should seriously consider the GEL Kayano 29.

Our In-Depth Look

Upper

Ben: "The Kayano's upper was very comfortable. The heel provided a secure fit without being too tight, and the toe box was roomy enough for my toes to remain irritation free. Also, after getting wet while running on wet grass, I was surprised how quickly the upper dried out."

Brycen: "The engineered mesh upper is softer than the previous version of the Kayano and was my favorite part of this shoe. It wraps around the foot well and offers great breathability. The Kayano 29's upper was very secure, helping accentuate the shoe's highly stable ride."

Liz: "The upper on the Kayano 29 was incredibly comfortable, offering enough padding in the heel collar to feel plush. Also, the engineered mesh in the mid and forefoot offered good breathability along with a surprisingly lightweight feel.

The fit was secure through my midfoot, with an accommodating amount of room in the forefoot, even for my wide feet. Overall, this is the kind of upper that feels luxurious without feeling stuffy or restrictive. I could simply slip the shoe on and never worry about fit issues or potential irritation no matter the mileage."

Midsole

Ben: "While running, the Kayano 29 felt firm but not uncomfortable. The FLYTEFOAM BLAST PLUS foam was fairly responsive, enabling me to run at normal speeds with a smooth ride. However, I did a few light strides in them, and they felt heavy and awkward at the faster pace."

Brycen: "There is a soft feel underfoot, and I did not feel any substantial energy return from the midsole while running. It was not as bouncy as I was hoping for, but I had substantial protection for my daily training runs and my feet always felt comfortable.

Given my current training schedule and needs, I was not looking to push top speeds when wearing the Kayano 29, and the shoe's comfortable upper and forgiving midsole provided everything I look for in a max stability daily training shoe."

Liz: "I was happy that ASICS added a few extra millimeters of cushioning to the Kayano 29's updated midsole design. The Kayano 28 was too minimal, and the shoe did not feel like it had enough protection for my longer runs.

With the Kayano 29, it is a completely different story. The FLYTEFOAM BLAST PLUS foam is pleasantly soft with a touch of bounce that keeps the shoe from feeling too sluggish out on the roads. The Kayano 29 also feels lighter and more nimble on foot than previous Kayanos (the 27 and earlier versions were relatively bulky), but I feel like the Kayano 29 finds a nice balance of protection and nimbleness. It feels sleek enough to forget it is on foot without sacrificing comfort during longer runs.

In terms of stability, version 28 was too flexible through the midfoot, and the support system was abrasive. With version 29, heel-to-toe transitions feel much smoother while providing more support through the arch, helpfully and comfortably guiding my foot through the gait cycle when needed. For marathon distances, I would choose a more cushioned shoe, but for everyday runs, the Kayano 29's well-balanced midsole allows you to remain focused and enjoy the run."

Outsole

Ben: "I ran in the Kayano 29 for about a month, piling up a fair amount of mileage on the shoe, and the outsole rubber held up very well. From my first test run to my last, I barely noticed the road underfoot thanks to the outsoles healthy amount of AHAR rubber. I ran on a variety of different surfaces, including paved roads, gravel roads, and grass fields, and the outsole always provided dependable traction."

Brycen: "The AHAR rubber outsole offers excellent grip on the roads and the treadmill. After 30 miles of test runs, the shoe has shown very little wear and tear, and I have no doubts that the Kayano 29 will withstand the test of time."

Liz: "With a substantial amount of AHAR rubber underfoot, the Kayano 29’s outsole, and its durability, is another element that runners can depend on. It is lightweight and flexible with the long-lasting durability needed to go for miles and miles."

Comparable Shoes

Ben: "The durability of the Kayano's outsole make this shoe stand out, and after +25 runs, I have noticed little to no wear. This is not the case with other shoes I have tested within the max-stability category. Also, the shoe's new LITETRUSS stability system felt seamless underfoot, offering a smooth ride that can compete with any max stability trainer. If you are in the market for a stability shoe, you should give the Kayano 29 a try."

Brycen: "I have reviewed the Saucony Tempus, Brooks Adrenaline GTS 22, New Balance Fresh Foam 860, Altra Provision 6, HOKA Gaviota 4, and I would recommend the Kayano 29 over all of them. The Tempus delivered a better ride and more versatility overall, but the Kayano is more comfortable. The Kayano 29's plush upper and soft underfoot feel truly set these shoes apart from the competition, in my opinion, making them a great option for those who need a max stability trainer."

Liz: "The Kayano 29 felt similar to the Kayano Lite 3, in my opinion. The Kayano Lite was plusher underfoot, and I liked the foot-cradling stability provided by the shoe's one-piece midsole. That said, runners looking for a more durable option with a more traditional feel should go with the Kayano 29, while those who want a softer, more sustainable option should choose the Kayano Lite 3.

Another similar shoe would be the New Balance 860 v13. The 860v13 offers similar levels of stability and protection, but with a midsole that cradles the heel and supports the arch slightly better than the Kayano, runners with high arches may appreciate the 860's stability system more than the Kayano 29. The 860 feels more nimble underfoot and is more flexible than the Kayano, but it is not as protective underfoot as the Kayano."

Individual Thoughts

BenOverall Score: 9/10

The ASICS Kayano 29 is a durable trainer that was a good fit for me and my daily training needs. It provided enough cushion for my legs, regardless of the type of run, but I would choose a different shoe for recovery days to get extra protection.

The upper design provided substantial ankle support on road runs, as well as some uneven grass runs. The Kayano was spacious enough to avoid irritation, and I did not get any hotspots or blisters from the shoes. The best part of the Kayano was its incredible durability. After +25 runs, the outsoles showed very little wear, and I am confident I will get many, many runs out of these shoes.

BrycenOverall Score: 9/10

For the past ten years, my mom has asked for the Kayano for Christmas, claiming it was the only shoe she would run in, and my mom certainly knows best because the ASICS Gel Kayano 29 is a fantastic daily trainer and stability shoe.

It is lightweight with a soft upper that wraps comfortably around the foot. My only complaint would be that the shoe was a bit narrow, and the fit caused some irritation throughout testing. I should note that I have a bunion on my left foot which was the area that experienced the most discomfort, so this issue is a little more specific to me. I would probably size up if I were to get another pair.

On the run, the Kayano 29 provided a highly stable and very smooth ride, and I will happily keep using these shoes for my casual daily training runs. After about two runs, the Kayano 29 was fully broken-in, and the shoe's comfort truly set in. These shoes lived up to my mom's hype, and I would recommend them to a casual runner who wants a durable shoe with excellent comfort and a supportive ride.

LizOverall Score: 8.5/10

Overall, I think the Kayano 29 is a wonderful improvement over version 28. It offers a balance of protective cushioning and reliable stability, making it ideal for a variety of everyday runs. The engineered mesh upper has enough stretch to give the shoe a sock-like fit without losing any security in the midfoot and heel. The cushioning has a soft squishiness that is comfortable upon initial step in and throughout your run.

The Kayano 29 offers enough protection for daily runs, but I would prefer more protection for longer runs. That said, I enjoyed the versatility of the Kayano, transitioning easily from the roads to gym workouts in a way that is unique for a higher-stacked shoe.Overall, the Kayano doesn’t stand out in any particular way. It is not the softest shoe or the bounciest shoe, but it provides what runners need for a stable and comfortable run, allowing you to forget about your shoes and enjoy your daily run.
