What's New

The Saucony Peregrine is well known for providing runners with grippy traction, substantial protection, and delightful comfort, and fortunately for Peregrine lovers everywhere, version 11 is essentially the same shoe. That said, Saucony has outfitted the new Peregrine 11 with a few updates that help dial in the shoe's fit and durability. While it is not the lightest or most exciting trail shoe on the market, the Peregrine 11 offers a pleasant balance of comfort and responsiveness thanks to the PWRRUN midsole foam. The embedded rock plate helps inspire confidence on rough, rocky terrain, while the PWRTRAC rubber outsole delivers trustworthy traction with its aggressive multi-directional lug design. Saucony finished off this update with a brand-new upper that is supportive, breathable, and durable thanks to the sturdy, open mesh top layer and sock-like air-mesh inner bootie.

The Bottom Line

For the runner looking for a workhorse trail shoe that can do it all, the Peregrine 11 should be on the shortlist. To accommodate even more runners' needs, Saucony has released multiple models of the Peregrine 11, including the Peregrine ST (soft terrain) and Peregrine GTX (waterproof upper). Regardless of what model you have on foot, the magic of the Peregrine 11 comes down to its excellent grip and impressive durability.

To deliver a slip-free grip on any terrain, the Peregrine features an aggressive lug configuration that will make quick work of mountainous terrain. The multi-directional chevron outsole pattern provides reliable grip both when climbing up hills and flying down them.

To complement the shoe's all-terrain grip, Saucony designed the Peregrine to deliver all-terrain protection as well. The new upper provides both more protection and added breathability compared to the previous model. The midfoot overlays were removed, and the toe-bumper was reduced for a lighter and more ventilated experience. In terms of fit, some runners may find the new durable mesh to be rigid initially, but our tester found that it loosened up after a couple of uses and felt comfortable and supportive after the break-in.

The Peregrine 11 provides a high level of cushioning without losing any of the shoe's nimble feel. The rock plate heightens the level of protection without sacrificing any of the comfort required for enjoyable long-distance backcountry runs. While the midsole is comfortable enough for daily training, it is not super soft by any means and maintains a responsive feel that is great when you want to pick up the pace. First and foremost, Saucony built the Peregrine 11 for fun runs on gnarly trails. It will perform well on manicured trails and fire roads too, but if you want to see the Peregrine shine, then take it out on a long mountainous adventure.

Our In-Depth Look

Shoe Softness i

Firm Soft

Kaitlin: "The Peregrine has a semi-firm underfoot feel. I noticed the light cushioning throughout my runs. It provides protection and comfort, but the ride remains responsive."

Ride/Energy Return i

Less Springy More Springy

Kaitlin: "The midsole feels firm and snappy. The lugs allow me to climb and descend technical terrain with confidence, making it that much easier to push the pace. The combination of the firmer midsole, reliable traction, and light weight is great for daily training."

Underfoot Protection i

Low High

Kaitlin: "The rock plate and outsole of this model provide superior protection from the elements. The midsole cushioning adds comfort on harder surfaces."

Underfoot Flexibility i

Rigid Elastic

Kaitlin: "This shoe is fairly rigid, but it does loosen up with wear, which I appreciated. For technical trails, it has just the right amount of rigidity to keep my foot protected and enough flex for my foot to react to the terrain."

Upper Feel i

Structured Adaptable

Kaitlin: "The new upper wraps your foot in structured mesh. It does not have a lot of give to it, but it protects the top of your foot from sharp rocks, branches, and anything else that may be on the trail. There is also a bumper around the toe box for additional protection. Saucony reduced the size of the bumper in this version, but I didn't have any issue with it."

Individual Thoughts

Kaitlin8/10

The Saucony Peregrine 11 is a great adventure shoe that keeps me feeling nimble and confident on steep climbs and descents while running. This shoe performs best for me on technical terrain when the outsole lugs can dig into the ground or grip rocks. It's fine on fire roads, but you won't get the full experience. The combination of all the protective elements (rock plate, structured upper, aggressive lugs) allowed me to feel really connected with the trail and confident in my run. Without that fear of slipping or sliding, it was easier to push the pace and enjoy my time outside.

The Peregrine 11 initially felt pretty stiff, but it became more adaptive as I put more miles on it. It has a snug wraparound fit with a low toe-box, and I found it true to size. The midfoot feels more voluminous in this version than the previous one. My only issue was the gusseted tongue rubbing my foot, but that was mostly alleviated when I wore a thicker sock. If the gusseted material came up higher, this might have reduced the friction and prevented more debris from coming into the shoe.
