What's New

With a complete overhaul, Saucony's highly cushioned stability shoe, the Hurricane 22, now features a lighter, more responsive midsole and a plush new upper. The PWRRUN+ midsole foam has 25% less weight than the EVERUN foam used before it while maintaining the same energy return. For moderate stability from overpronation, a TPU Guidance Frame helps to direct the foot through the gait cycle without the harsh feel of a post under the arch, and the luxurious feel of the midsole is mirrored by a plush jacquard mesh upper. Traditional lacing replaces the ISOFIT system of the past, and new FORMFIT design helps to cradle your foot inside of the shoe for a secure yet comfortable fit.

The Bottom Line

Where some highly cushioned stability shoes have firmer cushioning in order to maintain stability, the Saucony Hurricane 22 is able to keep a soft yet stable feel thanks to the PWRRUN+ foam, and its TPU guidance frame adds additional support on the medial side without the harshness under the arch that's usually associated with a traditional stability shoe. Our testers enjoyed the responsive cushioning and plush ride, and they felt that the shoe provided enough stability to prevent their overpronation with a smooth and natural feeling. Although they agreed that the shoe leans towards the heavy side, our testers loved the plush ride and comfortable upper provided by the Saucony Hurricane 22.

Our In-Depth Look

Shoe Softness i

Firm Soft

Although the Hurricane 22 may not offer the pillowy ride of a maximally cushioned HOKA, our testers loved the luxurious cushioning provided by the new PWRRUN+ midsole. They felt that it has just the right amount of softness without feeling vague or mushy underfoot.

Liz: "The new PWRRUN+ midsole gave this shoe a really soft and comfortable ride that allowed you foot to sink in just the right amount before responding."

Derek: "Although the PWRRUN+ midsole isn’t extremely soft, it still feels plush underfoot with enough squish to provide a very comfortable ride."

Ride/Energy Return i

Less Springy More Springy

The Hurricane 22 delivers a responsive ride that is uncharacteristic for a highly cushioned stability shoe. Our testers enjoyed the balance of luxurious cushioning and high energy return provided by the PWRRUN+ midsole.

Derek: "Even though the ride was soft, it didn’t compromise responsiveness. The new PWRRUN+ midsole provided a nice bounce that made me look forward to my everyday runs."

Liz: "Although the weight kept this shoe from feeling light and bouncy for me, there is definitely some spring to the PWRRUN+ midsole that gives it a responsive feel."

Underfoot Protection i

Low High

Whether it's for a long run or recovery day, the Hurricane 22 has the underfoot protection needed to keep your legs feeling fresh. Our testers enjoyed the plush cushioning and natural feeling support of the shoe.

Liz: "There is a ton of protection from the ground in the Hurricane 22. The road disappears underneath and you just feel the midsole cushioning as you run."

Derek: "Plenty of cushioning underfoot for you to be able to comfortably enjoy your everyday mileage and long runs."

Underfoot Flexibility i

Rigid Elastic

A TPU guidance frame sits on the medial side for overpronation support with a natural feel. This frame adds stiffness to the shoe when combined with the generous amount of PWRRUN+ foam, but our testers agreed that the Hurricane 22 offered a smooth ride thanks to its more flexible forefoot.

Derek: "Like many shoes designed to reduce pronation, this shoe is fairly rigid from the heel to the midfoot and flexible in the forefoot."

Liz: "The flexibility wasn’t noticeable in this shoe, but that being said, it still had a very smooth ride that transitioned well whether I was heel or midfoot striking."

Upper Feel i

Structured Adaptable

With the ISOFIT system out of the picture, the new Hurricane 22 is able to offer an adaptable yet supportive fit thanks to the new FORMFIT design and padded mesh. Our testers agreed that the shoe securely hugged the foot with a luxurious feel.

Liz: "The new upper is excellent. Although the padded nature may make it a bit warm during hot weather, the upper has a very plush feel that molds to the foot. Regardless, it still offers a secure fit that laces snug around the foot."

Derek: "The upper really shines in its comfort, but I also never felt like the upper wasn’t doing a good job keeping my foot locked down to the platform."

Individual Thoughts

DerekOverall Score: 8/10

Underfoot, the new PWRRUN+ midsole is surprisingly comfortable, responsive, and a significant upgrade from EVERUN in the previous model. Protecting the midsole is a durable crystal rubber outsole that held up quite well and showed minimal wear after a significant number of miles, and while this shoe didn’t completely bring my overpronated foot motion to neutral, it reduced it enough to get in everything from everyday runs to long runs.

In terms of fit, the Saucony Hurricane 22 had a fairly average volume throughout that provided plenty of space for my narrow foot. By cinching the laces pretty tight, I was able to get the lockdown I needed for everyday running. The upper is really plush and features memory foam-like material throughout the heel and midfoot and a buttery engineered mesh throughout the forefoot.

The Hurricane 22 is a great option for the runner looking for tons of cushioning and a stable ride. The PWRRUN+ midsole gives the shoe a bouncy and relatively responsive feel for the amount of cushioning that it provides. The upper is incredibly soft yet secure, and it feels plush around my foot thanks to the highly padded tongue and heel collar. My only issue with the Hurricane 22 was that it felt pretty heavy on foot. I had hoped that the bounciness of the PWRRUN+ midsole would make it seem lighter, but the Hurricane 22 felt heavier on longer runs and didn’t encourage me to pick up the pace. This would be a great option for someone who wants a protective and stable shoe for everyday training or larger runners who want cushioning that is still responsive.
