What's New

The adidas Ultra Boost 21 has been loaded with 6% more Boost foam in the midsole, which promises softer landings than previous versions. The introduction of a new Torsion System increases forefoot stiffness for a springier underfoot feel, making the shoe more responsive. If you love the environment, you'll also appreciate the Ultra Boost's eco-friendly facelift, as the all-new knit upper is made entirely from Primeblue recycled materials. These materials include Parley Ocean Plastics, which are upcycled plastics that have been intercepted from beaches.

The Bottom Line

If stylish looks are your priority, then the Ultra Boost 21 is definitely a top choice given its sleek design. However, as our mums always say, it's what is beneath the surface that truly counts.

Straight to the point, the Ultra Boost 21 is not the shoe for you if you're looking to go fast on your training runs. Although adidas has constructed the Ultra Boost 21 with a firm forefoot to add some responsiveness, the soft cushioning and higher weight make this shoe better suited to long, slow training runs rather than uptempo workouts. The Ultra Boost 21 is a solid daily trainer that just about any runner will enjoy, but there are softer, faster, and lighter options out there.

Our In-Depth Look

Shoe Softnessi

Jonathan: "The Ultra Boost 21 is loaded with plush cushioning in the heel and offers an overall comfortable underfoot feel."

Sarah: "A supportive midsole with boost cushioning provides soft landings for each stride."

Caroline: "The Ultra Boost 21 is soft and cushioned but is noticeably firmer than its previous iterations. Ultra Boosts usually have cloudlike step-in softness, which I love, but the new version is a bit firmer due to the redesigned midsole."

Ride/Energy Returni

Jonathan: "Where the Ultra Boost 21 shines is the high energy return of the Boost midsole. That being said, the heavier weight and somewhat thin forefoot negate the responsive nature of the midsole. As such, this shoe is best for running slow."

Sarah: "To use adidas's own words, 'energy was just energy until energy met the Ultra Boost 21.' That said, the Ultra Boost 21 is not the fastest shoe. There is just enough responsiveness to make the ride enjoyable."

Caroline: "I felt that the weight of the shoe didn't allow for as much energy return or responsiveness as I would've liked. As a midfoot striker, the higher heel design and stack height felt awkward at times and hindered my pace. When I wanted to pick up the tempo, I felt restricted from doing so."

Underfoot Protectioni

Jonathan: "There is a ton of heel cushioning, but the thin forefoot is subpar for shoes in this category. The experience is fine when heel striking, but midfoot and forefoot striking left me desiring more cushioning underfoot."

Sarah: "The is shoe provides the soft landing you would expect from Boost Cushioning. You'll feel the shoes and not the ground."

Caroline: "The Boost has plenty of cushioning and is ideal for running on harder surfaces. It has so much cushioning that it felt a bit excessive and clunky at times. After a few kilometres, I already felt the heaviness underfoot because of the excess foam and padding."

Ultra Boost 21 Review Outsole View

Flexibilityi

Jonathan: "There is a somewhat propulsive nature to the design of this shoe. The Boost midsole and LEP Torsion System provide some snap, but the heavier weight makes it hard to run fast."

Sarah: "The Torsion System provides an increase in forefoot stiffness that will give a more responsive run."

Caroline: "There is some reduction in flexibility in the Ultra Boost 21. The midsole felt pretty thick, and the forefoot was more rigid than previous models."

Upper Supporti

Jonathan: "The stretch-knit upper provides a snug fit. I have a lower volume foot that is slightly narrow, and I found the upper to be restrictive. While I did not have a problem, I am sure people with a higher volume foot will have issues."

Sarah: "There is slightly too much room in the toe box; however, the flared heel design and knit upper made out of recycled materials help provide more neutral and adaptable support."

Caroline: "The Primeknit+ upper provided sufficient support and breathability with its mesh design. The shoes were a little roomy and wide for my narrow feet. I would have preferred a more secure and snug fit."

Women's adidas Ultraboost Running Shoes

With a sock-like fit and all-day cushioning, the adidas Ultra Boost raises the bar for comfort among premium neutral running shoes. It's great for any type of run.

Individual Thoughts

Sarah7.5/10

Out of the box and ready to launch—the adidas Ultra Boost 21 requires no breaking in. A sock-like fit with a lace closure gives my feet a little more breathing room in the toe box, though it may border on too roomy for those with narrower feet. Boost capsules in the midsole give this shoe a bouncy energy return, while Boost cushioning helps deliver soft landings. The Ultra Boost 21 is a perfect daily trainer for the road or the gym.

This brand never fails to deliver a stylish shoe, and the Ultra Boost 21 is no exception. The fit of the 21st rendition is a bit wider than previous versions and does not hug my feet quite as snugly. I usually prefer a more locked-in and structured upper fit, but those with wider feet will likely enjoy this updated feel.

In terms of performance, the Ultra Boost 21 is not very propulsive and didn't give me the level of responsiveness that I wanted to pick up the pace. The shoe is also pretty heavy for a daily trainer, and I felt like it was weighing me down during my longer runs. The Ultra Boost 21 has been updated with a higher stack height, but unfortunately, it has lost some of the cloudlike underfoot feel of previous versions. I am also a midfoot striker and thought that there was way too much padding in the heel for me. The additional stack height felt restrictive, but heel strikers will not be bothered by this. To wrap things up, the Ultra Boost 21 is not my favourite update, but this shoe is still a great daily training option for runners looking for reliable comfort for slower-paced runs or recovery efforts.

I wore the original Ultra Boost and quite liked that shoe. It was a bit ahead of its time with the responsive Boost foam midsole. When I received version 21, I was excited to see how the shoe had changed over the years, especially considering six years have now passed since the original first hit markets. Unfortunately, I am sad to report that the Ultra Boost 21 seems dated. In many ways, the shoe hasn't changed from the original version and still has a snug fit with a shallow toe box, a stupid midfoot cage for the lacing, and a highly responsive cushioning system. More Boost has been added, but that comes with increased weight as a penalty.

The shoe doesn't feel much more cushioned than the original. With shoes like the Saucony Endorphin Speed, Skechers GoRun Max Road 4+ Hyper, and Nike ZoomX Invincible Run all proving it's possible to have highly cushioned, highly responsive shoes without adding any weight, it makes me wonder how the Ultra Boost 21 is relevant today. There are shoes like the Brooks Glycerin and ASICS Nimbus that are highly cushioned but not very responsive. However, those shoes feel better for cruising, because they don't have the weight penalty of the Ultra Boost 21. I think adidas should look at the Saucony Triumph 18 to see a shoe that realises the potential of the Ultra Boost.

All that being said, the adidas Ultra Boost 21 is an adequate shoe for a heavy heel-striker and for runs lasting up to an hour or so.
