The Best Track & Field Spikes of 2024

Updated: 18 September 2024

For track-and-field athletes looking to gain an edge this season, the spike you are wearing can make all the difference. Whether you are a sprinter, jumper, thrower, or distance athlete, read on to learn our experts' top spike and shoe picks for each track-and-field event.

What Are The Different Track & Field Events

Here's a quick refresher on how we categorise our track and field shoes and spikes and what types of events each type is designed for:

  • Sprint Distance Spikes (100m, 200m, 400m, hurdles, and relays) - For sprint distances, we recommend sprint spikes, which are designed to be aggressive on the track. These will offer a sock-like fit and act as an extension of your foot to promote a more explosive ride.
  • Middle Distance Spikes (800m, 1500m, and 1600m) - Mid-distance spikes will offer a more slipper-like fit, which is to say a more relaxed fit, but will still be contoured and snug. They are extremely lightweight and have semi-flexible soles. Depending on personal preferences, runners can choose between mid and long distance spikes depending on the level of cushioning they prefer.
  • Long Distance Spikes (3000m, 3200m, 5k, and 10k) Long-distance specific spikes generally have the most cushioning out of the different running events. Like mid-distance spikes, they will offer a more slipper-like fit, which is to say a more relaxed fit, but still contoured and snug. They are extremely lightweight and have semi-flexible soles for added comfort over long distance races.
  • Throw Shoes (Discus, Hammer, Javelin, Shot-put): Throw shoes can be broken down into three categories: glide movement, rotational movement, and javelin. Javelin spikes feature built-in spikes (forefoot and heel) and added ankle support. Glide and rotational movement shoes have smooth, flat soles that allow for ideal traction during different throwing techniques.
  • Jump Spikes (high jump, long jump, triple jump, and pole vault): While there are spikes designed for each specific jump event, jump spikes generally prioritise a high level of traction and a locked down fit.

Best Middle Distance Spike

Mid-distance spikes are ideal for races ranging from the 800m to the 1600m (mile). These spikes will fit and perform similarly to long distance spikes, but will have less cushioning and will be less built up and therefore lighter. They will also be more rigid than long distance spikes to promote speed over shorter distances.

Our Pick:

Providing an extra boost is the pebax outsole spike plate, which features six removable spike pin receptacles, to provide superior grip and help maintain that high turnover needed to win your race.

Best Sprint Spike

Sprint spikes cover a number of track events, including: 60m-400m, hurdles, and relays. Sprint spikes are designed to be extremely lightweight and aggressive, keeping runners on their toes for quick transitions. They should fit snugly and have a sock-like feel. There is little to no cushioning in order to get athletes on their toes faster and the spikes will be grouped at the forefoot to maximise grip on the track.

Our Pick:

adidas adizero Prime SP 3 Strung
adidas adizero Prime SP 3 Strung

The adidas adizero Prime SP 3 is a top-tier sprint spike designed with input from elite athletes. Ideal for events up to 200m, it features a stiff, full-length midsole plate with responsive Lightstrike Pro foam for explosive propulsion. Best Throw Shoes

(Shot put, Discus, and Hammer, Javelin)

Throwing events include the shot put, discus, hammer, and javelin (more on javelin in the next section). Throwing shoes should fit snug with the toes reaching the tip of the shoes without feeling jammed. Shot put, discus, and hammer shoes do not contain spikes and are flat due to the techniques used in those events. Rotational throw shoes are designed with a very smooth outsole that allows for the spinning movement that is followed by the release of a shot put, hammer, or discus.
