What's New

It has been an exciting fall season in the world of running, with a lot of highly anticipated shoe releases, not least of which is the ASICS Novablast 3. This highly cushioned neutral daily trainer is bound to delight those who have been eagerly awaiting its arrival.

The main update is the Novablast's nearly 1-ounce weight drop, which can be attributed to the new FLYTEFOAM BLAST PLUS midsole compound. ASICS claims that the new foam is nearly 20% softer and 20% faster than the previously used FLYTEFOAM BLAST material. Even better, the shoe has been updated with a new wider platform in combination with heightened sidewalls, helping to stabilize the Novablast's healthy stack of soft foam. The shoe's stiffer heel counter also helps hold feet securely over the midsole, reinforcing the new, more reliable design.

The Novablast 3 update is topped off with an upgraded monofilament jacquard upper mesh, a thinner tongue design, and a trimmed-down outsole, which all contribute to the shoe's big weight loss. These changes also promise secure comfort and reliable traction, perfect for daily runs.

The Bottom Line

ASICS has had quite the year, releasing a lot of major updates that have performed well at all levels of running, but the most successful update of the year may just be the Novablast 3.

Let's get straight to the good stuff and dive into the new lighter, more responsive FLYTEFOAM BLAST PLUS midsole. This compound is a superstar, providing a near-perfect balance of comfort, protection, and energy return that truly can do it all. Legs feeling a little tired and want to take things slow? Grab the Novablast for excellent protection that will keep your legs fresh. Ready to crush a tempo run or speed intervals? The Novablast's midsole packs enough snap to make those faster paces feel quick and smooth. That said, the Novablast 3 is still not the best racing option for experienced runners. But for beginner runners, this shoe could be ideal for your first half or full marathon effort.

Many runners probably still want an answer to the question, "Is the Novablast 3 more stable?" Well, with a new wider base, retooled midsole geometry, and raised sidewalls, the Novablast 3 offers runners a much higher level of stability than the first two versions of the shoe, helping give wearers the confidence to take these stars on any run their hearts may desire. Couple this with a secure jacquard mesh upper that wraps comfortably around the foot, and you are flirting with a near-perfect daily trainer.

Okay, so let's not get ahead of ourselves. The Novablast still has room for improvement, as the AHAR rubber outsole does not provide the best traction or durability when compared to other daily trainers on the market. That said, the Novablast 3 has a new counterpart this year, the Novablast 3 TR, and if you do not mind the slight weight increase, then the TR will provide you with the heightened levels of traction and durability you're looking for while delivering an almost identical ride. Bottom-line, the Novablast 3 is an amazing update that is a strong contender for best daily trainer of the year, so get yours while you can.

Our In-Depth Look

Upper

Connor: "The jacquard mesh upper is soft and light, and it offers just enough support to handle my daily training needs. It is a really simple design that works well on every run. The Novablast 3 produces more of a performance-like fit with a medium-to-snug feel throughout. The shoe was also true to size for me."

Jon: "The upper wrapped around my feet wonderfully and provided a lot of comfort while running. The jacquard mesh is forgiving yet sturdy, and I had no issues with slippage or spillover when cornering. The heel collar is nicely padded, helping provide a luxurious feel that kept me comfortable throughout my testing runs."

Kaitlin: "The Novablast's upper provided a seamless, lightweight wrap that had an excellent lockdown, which enabled me to stay focused on my run. The improved heel collar design is comfortably plush, keeping my foot locked in place. I also did not experience any irritation while wearing the Novablast 3, and I appreciated that the collar did not rest too high up on the ankle, which has been an issue with other shoes that I have tested. Though it is a mesh material, the Novablast's upper is not very adaptable, and it may not accommodate all foot types in standard width."

Midsole

Connor: "The Novablast 3's new FLYTEFOAM BLAST PLUS midsole offers an improved energy return while retaining the shoe's signature, highly comfortable underfoot feel. The foam is an excellent upgrade, and the additional spring makes picking up the pace fun. Again, the Novablast maintains its ultra-smooth heel-to-toe transition, which is still perfect for cruising on long or recovery runs.

When the Novablast was initially released, one of the main problems was the extremely soft midsole foam, which many runners found to be too unstable. The new FF BLAST PLUS compound does well to create a forgivingly soft underfoot experience that is also not overly mushy. Combine this with the midsole's redesigned geometry, wider base, and higher sidewalls, and you get a Novablast with an uncharacteristically stable ride."

Jon: "From the moment I put on the Novablast 3, I loved how protective and stable it felt. The newly widened platform offers a dependable amount of stability, while the FLYTEFOAM BLAST PLUS foam provides protective landings with a high energy return. Though I would not use the words 'bouncy' or 'springy' to describe the Novablast 3's midsole, I still got plenty of pop from the foam during my runs, and I could tell that the midsole was ready to pick up the pace whenever I needed it to.

This balance of protection and responsiveness leads me to the true reason why I think the Novablast 3 is so great: the shoe's incredibly versatile ride. While I have not used the Novablast for a speed workout or super long run yet, I am more than confident that it can handle any type of run."

Kaitlin: "The underfoot feel is on the softer side, but with the level of bouncy return in each step, the resiliency of the foam prevents it from feeling too unstable. The ride is bouncy and efficient, making long mileage feel easier on the body. The versatility of the Novablast is impressive, and I would recommend these daily trainers to anyone looking for one shoe for every run."

Outsole

Connor: "The outsole is fairly thin and encases the outside perimeter of the base of the Novablast's platform. There is a strategic piece of rubber in the middle of the forefoot to provide additional traction and durability, and I had no issues running dry summer miles on the road while wearing the Novablast 3. After 100 miles/ 160.9 km, the shoe does not raise any major durability concerns, and I expect that the outsole will outlast the midsole's resiliency."

Jon: "I typically would like to get past the 100-mile/ 160.9 km mark before evaluating the durability of a shoe's outsole, but so far, the Novablast's AHAR rubber has shown no signs of wear. Also, I had no problems on the roads with traction, and despite the large stack of soft foam, I always felt secure cornering with the Novablast's sticky traction."

Kaitlin: "With the Novablast 3's sturdy rubber outsole and thick midsole, I do not feel very connected to the ground while running. That said, both of these components work well together to provide excellent shock absorption, keeping my feet and legs feeling fresher for longer. The reinforced rubber section in the middle of the outsole provided traction on slippery surfaces, and it seems like it will help improve version 3's durability. Overall, the Novablast 3's outsole construction seems more durable this time around."

Comparable Shoes

Connor: "The Novablast has become a hugely popular shoe, mostly because it offers a unique underfoot experience that outperforms many of the other daily trainers on the market. The shoe's $229.94 price point also does not hurt its appeal, especially given how versatile and high-performing it is. I would like to note that the Novablast's cushioning-to-weight ratio is simply phenomenal.

Though not exact matches, I would put the HOKA Mach 5 and New Balance FuelCell in a similar category as the Novablast 3. The Mach 5 is a close comparison, as it provides plenty of soft underfoot foam while also feeling snappy at a variety of paces.

The Rebel 3, while lower to the ground and slightly more performance oriented, offers a similar level of responsiveness at a price point that is competitive with the Novablast. I like both options, and I think the best will depend on individual preference.

Kaitlin: "In the performance trainer category, I would include the HOKA Clifton, New Balance 1080, and the On Cloudstratus 2. All of these shoes provide a tremendous amount of cushion in a lightweight package. I would recommend the Novablast blast over the Clifton because the cushioning has a lot more energy return.

I would also recommend the Novablast over the Cloudstratus 2 and 1080, especially if you are a runner looking for something that has a slightly more propulsive feel underfoot. What sets this shoe apart from the others is the responsive cushioning, and every toe-off felt springy while wearing the Novablast."

Individual Thoughts

ConnorOverall Score: 8.5/10

The Novablast series has only been around for a few years, but it has quickly grown to become one of the most talked about shoes within the ASICS performance line. Simply put, the Novablast is a fun and versatile trainer that does a fantastic job of creating a protective yet energetic ride perfect for daily training. Though this is a daily trainer, the FF BLAST PLUS midsole is both light and energetic enough for some faster efforts as well.

I enjoyed the original Novablast for its bold design, and I also appreciated version 2 as it improved the shoe's level of stability. Now with version 3, ASICS has dialed up the shoe's performance and has truly defined what the Novablast series means to the brand. I found myself using the shoe in my daily training quiver, and as someone who enjoys a little extra stack, the Novablast has seen plenty of miles.

After talking with many reviewers and teammates, I have found that most people agree that the Novablast 3 is a huge success for the ASICS team, and if you are a runner looking for one shoe that can handle all your training, it is worth giving the Novablast a try!

Admittedly, I am the type of person who believes in the hype and gets excited about the "big thing" that everyone is talking about, but, as we all know, big hype does not always equal good execution. Just watch the Game of Thrones series finale if you want a glaring example.

Thankfully, the Novablast 3 is nothing like the GOT finale, and is, in fact, the real deal. I love these shoes, and at $229.94, it is hard to think of another shoe that is as high performing and as stylish as these trainers. As our friend Kofuzi has said, the Novablast 3 is for the runner who wants just one running shoe that can handle all their runs: from daily training to speed workouts, even to some races. You really cannot go wrong with the ASICS Novablast 3, and you will not regret it if you give them a try.

KaitlinOverall Score: 8.5/10

The Novablast 3 ran true to size and performed as well as I had expected. It always impressed me when I put it on and had the opportunity to go for a run. I was already a fan of this line before testing version 3, but the small tweaks to the outsole and heel collar have greatly improved the shoe's performance and overall comfort. Though sadly, I noticed some hot spots and nerve pain in the forefoot after pushing through a couple of double-digit mileage runs, and this was maybe because the Novablast's forefoot was a touch too narrow for me.
