What's New

The On Cloudrunner is a neutral running shoe crafted to provide runners with dependable comfort, as well as an inherently stable underfoot feel with the versatility needed to deliver quality performance to any daily training run. On's Cloud-Tec pods with Zero-Gravity foam midsole promise both soft landings and solid energy return. Meanwhile, the shoe's relatively broad base and cradle-shaped geometry create a smooth, supportive ride. Finished off with a lightweight, breathable mesh upper and padded heel collar, the On Cloudrunner offers the comfort and reliability runners need to conquer daily workouts.

The Bottom Line

Built for the everyday runner who needs added support, the On Cloudrunner provides comfort upon initial step-in and a well-cushioned ride that delivers substantial protection excellently paired with daily training efforts. Its engineered mesh upper is supportive with unbeatable breathability and a pleasantly light on-foot feel, making the Cloudrunner a fantastic option for warm-weather runs.

The Cloudrunner's midsole offers highly protective landings thanks to its ultralight Zero-Gravity midsole foam and unique Cloud-Tec pods. But the Cloudrunner is not especially soft underfoot despite its protective nature, and some runners may prefer a plusher footbed. The shoe's wider platform and cradle-shaped construction promise support at every step of your run, and it delivers a secure, confidence-instilling feel that is ready to go right out of the box. Whether you're a beginner runner, getting back into running, or just looking for your next daily training shoe, the Cloudrunner will help you rack up daily mileage while always keeping your feet in the ideal comfort zone.

Our In-Depth Look

Upper

Kaleb: "I really liked the Cloudrunner's upper design. The wrap comfortably secured my foot while providing ample space for toe splay. Given its level of comfort and trendy style, the Cloudrunner has become my go-to work and coaching trainer."

Connor F: "The upper of the Cloudrunner is incredible. From the first test run to the last, I never had to make adjustments to find my ideal fit or get a better lockdown. The upper materials have shown no wear throughout my testing, and I have not had any issues with hotspots even after using the shoes on many different types of runs. Due to this, I've been surprised how frequently I have been reaching for the Cloudrunner; lately, I grab them almost every time I leave the house."

Midsole

Kaleb: "Soft is not the word I would use to describe the feel of the On Cloudrunner. The midsole was great for absorbing the impact of foot strikes, but the embedded speed board was firm and a bit harsh on my foot. The Cloudrunner's midsole was also not as responsive as I had expected, given On's description of the shoe. That said, the firm footbed plus Speedboard combo did enable me to pick up the pace when I really wanted to. I could hold tempo pace without difficulty, though I found the sweet spot, in terms of pace, was around 8:00/mi. I expected a snappier underfoot feel from the midsole, but it was more of a protective roller versus a springy snapper."

Connor F: "The On Cloudrunner's level of softness is a bit challenging for me to rate. While running, the initial impact from the footstrike is taken away by the Cloud-Tec pods. However, just under the sock liner is the Speedboard, which runs the full length of the shoe, and I found that on any run over 30-minutes, the bones in my feet began feeling uncomfortable.

On the one hand, the shoe cushions landings well, but because the Speedboard is so close to the foot, I felt every landing on the hard plastic, ultimately taking a toll on the smaller bones in my forefoot. The Cloudrunner's midsole does not feel as responsive as some of the newer midsole foams currently available, and the pods do not snap back as much as I thought they would."

Outsole

Kaleb: "There is a significant amount of underfoot protection in the On Cloudrunner thanks to the Cloud-Tec midsole design. The embedded speed board offers additional protection and helps defend my feet from any rocks and debris on the road. Again, the Cloudrunner is unique in that it is highly effective at protecting the foot from impact, but its harsher overall feel limits it to shorter runs, at least for my preferences."

Connor F: "The level of underfoot protection I get from the Cloudrunner is very high. The shoe has a relatively tall stack height, and the individual pods do a great job defending against rocks and debris, almost as if they were independent suspension systems. Further, the Speedboard almost functions like a rock plate, helping keep my foot protected regardless of the type of surface I was running on. The Cloudrunner almost feels like a trail shoe with its level of protection, and I did find myself venturing onto trails while testing and was impressed by how versatile the shoe was."

Comparable Shoes

Connor: "I think the On Cloudmonster is comparable to the Cloudrunner. The biggest difference between the two shoes is that the Cloudmonster is much softer underfoot due to the larger pods and higher midsole stack. The Cloudrunner is more stable than the Cloudmonster but has a less bouncy and fun ride. For those who enjoy highly cushioned shoes, I would recommend the Cloudmonster, but those looking for a more controlled and stable ride will probably prefer the security of the Cloudrunner."

Individual Thoughts

KalebOverall Score: 8/10

I have not tested many On shoes, but I am familiar with the brand and was excited to get the Cloudrunner out on the roads. After a broad range of testing runs, I am still a little confused about how I feel about the shoe. Starting with the upper, the Cloudrunner is very stylish, and the shoe's signature look will compliment nearly any outfit. It is also very comfortable on foot, and I appreciated the secure wrap and overall spaciousness through the forefoot. Because of this, the Cloudrunner has quickly become one of my go-to shoes for all-day wear.

On the run, the Cloudrunner produced some mixed results for me. It was very protective, and the Cloud-Tec, Zero-Gravity midsole was highly proficient at absorbing the impact of the foot strike. The midsole was not very energetic, and I was surprised by the lack of snap produced by the internal Speedboard. Additionally, the Speedboard felt harsh underfoot and became uncomfortable after 3 or 4 miles, resulting in some issues with sore feet and calves after my longer testing runs. That said, the cradle design adds a surprising amount of stability underfoot, instilling a lot of confidence whenever I was on uneven terrain.

Overall, I would recommend the Cloudrunner for easier daily runs in the 4- to 5-mile range. Furthermore, with its stylish look and all-day comfort, the Cloudrunner is an excellent option for runners who like to transition seamlessly from the office to their daily run.

Connor Overall Score: 7/10

Given my experience testing other On shoes, I was excited to try the On Cloudrunner. The brand has started to gain a reputation as a real competitor within the running shoe market, and I feel like the Cloudrunner will bolster that reputation even more, despite needing some retooling moving forward.

The Cloudrunner is so close to being a great running shoe for me, and my biggest issue with the shoe is how harsh the footbed felt at times. If the Speedboard was a bit more flexible, and if On added more foam to separate the foot from the board, then the Cloudrunner would be perfect for all daily mileage. Regardless of the shoe's issues, I have enjoyed running in the Cloudrunner, and I found it to be a shoe that was more than the sum of its parts.

Initially, I thought the shoe would be too heavy and far too rigid to be fun to run in, but I was very wrong. I returned to the Cloudrunner time and time again for any run under an hour, and I also started to use it as my casual shoe for its stylish look. The Cloudrunner is another step forward for On as they continue to build their reputation in the world of competitive running shoes, and I am excited to see what comes out of the brand next.
