What's New

As one of the highest performing marathon racing shoes on the market, the adidas adizero Adios Pro needs no introduction, and adidas continues to refine this super shoe in version 3. With an increased stack of Ligthstrike PRO foam in the forefoot, the Adios Pro 3 has an all-new 6.5-mm drop, while strategic midsole cutouts help minimize weight.

Additionally, adidas' signature carbon ENERGYRODS get an upgrade in the Adios Pro 3. They now run the entire length of the midsole in a cohesive unit, promising a more responsive and efficient overall running experience. The changes don't end there, as the Adios Pro 3 features an updated Continental and Textile Rubber outsole, which has no difficulty gripping the road and helps the shoe's durability. The single-layer Celermesh upper remains relatively untouched, delivering a familiar lightweight and breathable feel that will keep runners securely locked in as they tackle long-distance efforts.

The Bottom Line

The proof has always been in the pudding with the adidas adizero Adios Pro, and this super shoe has accumulated quite the list of accolades since its launch in 2020, including a few world-record performances. Now, thanks to a host of updates, the Adios Pro 3 is once again primed for success as we speed toward marathon season.

The Lightstrike PRO midsole is now softer with the help of the additional forefoot stack, and it's even better equipped to protect runners over marathon distances or beyond. Unfortunately, the increased stack comes at a price, as the Adios Pro 3 has gained a little weight and lost a small touch of speed. The Adios Pro 3 makes up for these shortcomings with an updated ENERGYRODS 2.0 system that maximizes the shoe's efficiency through the gait cycle and improves the shoe's bouncy snap at toe-off. Additionally, with its retooled wider platform, the Adios Pro 3 is more stable than its predecessors, further highlighting its efficiency and improved level of protection.

With the increased stack and weight of the Adios Pro 3, many will find the adidas Takumi Sen to be better geared for faster, sub-marathon efforts. This does not mean runners should shy away from the Adios Pro 3, as these super shoes are unquestionably better suited for marathon races, and it won't be a surprise when the Adios Pro 3 adds some hardware to the adidas trophy case this year.

Our In-Depth Look

Upper

Connor F.: "The upper on the Adios does an adequate job of providing a secure lockdown and is easy to lace up in one go. The only issue I had with the shoe is that the upper material is not extremely supple and could cause rubbing issues with the wrong sock combo."

Kaleb: "The Celermesh upper is race ready and feels light and airy on foot. It is very structured, which may be limiting for some runners, but the overall fit worked well and was true to size. If I was really looking for an issue, then I would say my laces came untied quite a few times throughout testing, but we could easily chalk this up to user error."

Midsole

Connor F.: "The Adios Pro 3 is extremely bouncy. It is one of those shoes that is hard to stop running in after a couple of solid strides; it just keeps bouncing you down the road. I enjoyed how smooth the Pro 3's ride was, as it delivered almost seamless heel-to-toe transitions that were perfect while on longer tempo runs and marathon-paced workouts.

The shoe's Lightstrike PRO midsole is soft, but initially, it felt pretty unique underfoot. At first, the forefoot felt firmer than the heel, but the forefoot softened up after a few runs. Once it had broken in, I was impressed with how soft the Pro was, especially for such a fast shoe. I honestly think that this might be the softest carbon-plated racing shoe on the market."

Kaleb: "The Adios Pro 3's midsole is electric and the Lightstrike PRO foam has an impressive balance of softness and responsiveness, which made for some fantastic testing runs. I loved how the shoe injected an energetic pop into each stride. This shoe feels like it was designed specifically with marathon distances in mind."

Outsole

Connor F.: "The Adios Pro 3 has a smooth, climbing-shoe-like rubber outsole. When looking at the sole, I was concerned that traction could be an issue on anything except perfectly smooth sections of road, but I was pleasantly surprised by how well the shoe grips all surfaces. I have used this shoe on everything from the track to hard crushed gravel paths, and traction was never an issue. Durability-wise, I am happy to say that the wear is minimal after 50 miles, and I haven't seen any signs of the rubber wearing down. Overall, the outsole on the Pro 3 is extremely lightweight with great traction and durability."

Kaleb: "The Adios Pro's outsole is deceptively grippy. At first glance, it looks a little concerning with its thin, smooth surface. That said, the rubber outsole provides fantastic traction, and I had no issues on any road-related surfaces. The rubber outsole is surprisingly durable, and there are no signs of breakdown after testing. I am not sure this is the most durable super shoe, but regardless, the outsole is top-notch."

Comparable Shoes

Connor F.: "The Adios Pro 3 and METASPEED Sky+ both provide an elite level of energy return with different underfoot experiences. The METASPEED is lighter on foot and is slightly firmer through the gait cycle with an explosive pop at toe-off. If you are not running at more uptempo speeds, then it can feel like you are fighting against the shoe's specific rockered configuration.

Comparatively, the Adios Pro 3 has a much more cushioned underfoot feel and delivers a squishy sensation that is not energy sapping. For courses with tighter turns, I would choose the Sky+, but for races with long straights and extended descents, the Adios Pro 3 would be my choice.

The Adios Pro and Endorphin Pro give excellent impact protection, but I feel that I was getting more performance out of the Adios Pro. I think that the Endorphin Pro 3 is a more versatile shoe that will work for all types of runners, but the Adios Pro just has that extra bit of snap that I am looking for on race day."

Kaleb: "I am not going to lie, it has been a little challenging for me to compare the Adios Pro 3 to other marathon racing super shoes, partially because I have not had an abundance of experience with the category until more recently, but here it goes.

Compared to the METASPEED Sky+, the Adios Pro 3 is softer and more protective, and I would favor the Adios for anything 10K and longer. On the flip side, I would choose the METASPEED for shorter, faster races.

The Endorphin Pro 3 is more comfortable and stable overall. For a sub-elite runner like myself, the Endorphin hits the sweet spot for longer distances, with the Adios Pro a very close second. Personally, I think more experienced runners will prefer the Adios Pro 3 over the Endorphin Pro 3. If you want a little more comfort for the marathon, then grab the Endorphin. If you want a little more speed for the marathon, then go with the Adios."

Individual Thoughts

Connor F.Overall Score: 9/10

I thoroughly enjoyed testing the adidas adizero Adios Pro 3. The shoe's ride is smooth, fast, and can handle marathon paces easily. These super shoes remain a quality choice for any race at 5K distance and over, though I will say that there are some other options I prefer for shorter races. The carbon fiber ENERGYRODS and the Lightstrike PRO foam work harmoniously together to speed me forward efficiently, which is made even better by how well the shoe works with my stride.

Unlike some other super shoes, the Adios Pro 3 feels smooth regardless of the pace and creates a bouncy ride that almost feels like being gently pushed on a swing as the shoe transitions from heel to toe. Some shoes affect the natural rhythm of your gait cycle and ultimately alter how you run, but the Adios Pro 3 just feels seamless.

Moving forward, I would like to see a slight weight reduction and more supple materials used in the upper. Despite these small things, I have found the Adios Pro 3 to be one of the fastest and most comfortable carbon-plated racing shoes I have worn.

Hats off to the adidas team for this update. It is a tall order to improve a shoe that is already so popular and so high-performing, but adidas has elevated version 3 of the Adios Pro.

The Lightstrike PRO midsole is excellent, and its performance over the years speaks for itself. I appreciated the added stack, increased softness, and better protection in this update, and I do not feel like the shoe was lacking any speed. I would happily run in these super shoes for a marathon race, but the Endorphin Pro 3 would be my preference because of its heightened level of comfort and more versatile range of use.

As mentioned earlier, I think runners with more marathon experience than myself will enjoy the Adios Pro 3 and will appreciate the update's improved comfort and stability. Furthermore, I found that the updated ENERGYRODS 2.0 system made heel-to-toe transitions smoother and more efficient, which I know runners will appreciate down the home stretch of a marathon. The slight weight increase may raise a few eyebrows, and the upper is not the most comfortable compared to other options. Regardless, the Adios Pro continues to improve, which tells me that it will continue to be a top marathon racing shoe for the upcoming season.
