What's New

Version 7 of the HOKA Challenger ATR has been completely overhauled, and this highly-stacked road-to-trail comfort cruiser has everything runners need to heed the call of the wild.

Most exciting is the Challenger's reimagined CMEVA foam midsole, which has been stacked higher for a softer, plusher underfoot experience that smoothly propels runners from stride to stride. Even smoother is the shoe's ability to transition from the road to the trail, and with its new Durabrasion outsole rubber and redesigned lug pattern, the Challenger ATR 7 promises excellent versatility on all surfaces.

HOKA finished things off with an updated mesh upper that is simple in design yet highly effective in action, producing a secure hold and dependable comfort no matter where the trails or roads may take you.

The Bottom Line

Trails around the world have become very familiar with the HOKA Challenger ATR over the years, as runners have fallen in love with the shoe's plush comfort and dynamic road-to-trail versatility, and version 7 will carry on the tradition of its predecessors, continuing to delight the road-to-trail runners and the HOKA faithful with all its wonderful updates.

Updated throughout, the Challenger ATR 7 stays true to its nature, emphasizing comfort and protection that remains ideal for long easy trail or road-to-trail runs. The new, softer CMEVA midsole is soft without being mushy or energy-zapping, and HOKA's signature rocker geometry keeps the ride silky-smooth, though not overly fast. The Challenger ATR 7 can handle a small range of paces but is best for easy long runs set to cruise control.

The Challenger's true versatility is in its ability to handle a variety of surfaces, and thanks to the shoe's new Durabrasion outsole rubber and redesigned lug pattern, version 7 may be the most versatile Challenger yet, continuing to deliver dependable traction on paved roads and gravel trails. Furthermore, runners can also depend on version 7 over short segments on technical terrain or wet trails.

Again, there are better options for the runner looking for top-notch speed and maneuverability on the most technical terrain. However, if you are a runner who wants consistent comfort and a carefree ride that can go the distance, then the Challenger ATR 7 is an excellent option. The HOKA Challenger ATR 7 remains an ideal shoe for beginner runners new to trail running and is also a reliable option for more experienced runners looking to take on long easy runs and pile up massive mileage over training blocks.

Our In-Depth Look

Upper

David: "The upper blends a breathable engineered mesh with a soft, padded tongue and heel collar. The upper was comfortable from heel to toe, except for the insole, which put unwanted pressure on the outside of my slightly wider foot. This was not an issue on my 4- to 5-mile runs, but it became an issue when running over 6 miles."

Grace: "The upper fits comfortably, holds my foot in place, and is true to size. The tongue has some padding, which I prefer from a HOKA shoe. It just seems like whenever HOKA adds a thin tongue, it causes me issues, so I appreciated the level of padding in the Challenger ATR 7. Anyways, the new engineered mesh upper is light and breathable, and it was fairly spacious, which I liked throughout testing. I can wear thin or thick socks and have plenty of room with both."

Midsole

David: "The midsole feels soft and protective, with a rockered geometry that adds smoothness to every stride. There is a lot of cushioning underfoot, offering a tremendous amount of protection without feeling sluggish. The Challenger's midsole is at its best on light trails and performed surprisingly well on the roads."

Grace: "The HOKA Challenger ATR 7 has a noticeably softer midsole than previous iterations of the shoe, as well as an increased stack height that gives me more protection for high-impact, high-mileage efforts. I liked using this shoe for long-distance and recovery runs, and I thoroughly appreciated the consistent and protective underfoot feel for road-to-trail runs. This shoe is not meant for speedy efforts, as it does not have a highly responsive midsole or a snappy carbon plate, but the rockered geometry of the midsole helped propel me forward on my testing runs."

Outsole

David: "Designed as a do-it-all, road-to-trail shoe, the Challenger's outsole is protective and grippy without being overly aggressive or too heavy. There is plenty of traction, even on more technical trails, but the Challenger felt the best on fire roads and light trails. In other words, this is a trail cruiser and best for easier daily runs."

Grace: "The Durabrasion rubber outsole is durable and provides excellent traction on the roads and the trails. The lug design and pattern are aggressive enough to deliver consistent performance on trails while not being too aggressive for comfortable road runs. Overall, I have been very impressed with this update."

Comparable Shoes

David: "This trail cruiser compares closest with the HOKA Speedgoat and the Altra Olympus. The ride and rocker are less aggressive than the Speedgoat, so it will work better for the trail runner who wants a mellow run at their own pace.

As for the Olympus, even though I prefer its soft yet responsive cushioning, the Challenger is 2 or 3 ounces lighter, which is quite significant for long days on your feet. The Challenger sets itself apart from the other shoes by providing a high level of comfort and excellent versatility for both the road and the trail. The Challenger 7 also has an impressive weight-to-cushioning ratio."

Grace: "I would compare the HOKA Challenger ATR 7 to the Nike Pegasus Trail 3 and the HOKA Speedgoat 5. The new HOKA Challenger looks very similar to the Speedgoat 5, but the former feels softer and lighter, albeit less responsive, with a more comfortable all-around fit. I have always been a Speedgoat fan (with the Speedgoat 2 and Evo Speedgoat being my absolute favorite trail shoes of all time), but I am surprised to say that I prefer the updated Challenger.

The Challenger 7's midsole feels similar to the Nike Peg Trail 3 underfoot, as both midsoles are very soft, and both outsole designs are very versatile for road and trail runs. The Challenger's outsole grips slightly better (especially on wet surfaces) and feels lighter on foot than the Peg 3. I love both shoes, but I slightly prefer the Challenger because of how lightweight it feels while still being super protective and secure."

Individual Thoughts

DavidOverall Score: 7.5/10

The Challenger 7 feels right at home on mellow trail runs, hikes, and even for some road miles. The shoe's lightweight design and high cushioning provide extra comfort for long days on your feet. Despite its large stack of midsole foam, the rocker geometry delivers smooth transitions between each stride.

The upper was comfortable thanks to the padding around the tongue and heel collar, while the engineered mesh in the forefoot helped improve breathability. My only complaint is that I experienced some unwanted pressure on the outside of one of my feet during longer runs. I attribute this to the insole and overall width of the midfoot, which felt narrow for a standard-width shoe.

Overall, this is a solid and reliable trail shoe, and I would highly recommend it for the runner or hiker who wants a lightweight and comfortable shoe to cruise through their weekly miles.

GraceOverall Score: 9/10

The HOKA Challenger ATR has had a complete makeover with the release of version 7. The redesigned upper mesh, the softer, lighter midsole foam with increased stack height, and the additional rubber added to the outsole all work together to deliver, what I consider, the best version of the Challenger yet. I do not have any complaints about this shoe, and it has even surpassed my favorite trail shoe of all time, the Speedgoat 2.

The shoe fits perfectly; the upper is breathable and secure, and the midsole has lots of soft foam underfoot, making it easy to take this shoe long distances. I was surprised and impressed by how consistent the Challenger's underfoot feel was as I seamlessly transitioned from rocky trails to cement sidewalks. Regardless of where I was running or what surface I was running on, the Challenger ATR 7 always provided excellent impact protection throughout testing. I recommend the Challenger ATR 7 to any runner or hiker looking for a versatile, lightweight daily trainer to enjoy on a variety of terrain.
