Q&A

  • What are trail running shoes? How are they different from road running shoes?
Trail running shoes are built to handle the ruggedness of the trails and protect your feet from things you might encounter on your run, like rocks, roots, fallen branches, and so on. The uppers are built with overlays in certain spots, like around the toes, heels, and sides of the shoes for additional protection. When you're running on a paved road, the upper doesn't see as much action as on a trail. For that reason, the upper on a road shoe has less reinforcement and more mesh for a lighter more breathable design. The midsoles in trail shoes are generally stiffer throughout to provide more support on rocky or uneven surfaces. Some trail running shoes include rock plates between the midsole and outsole for added protection against sharp objects such as rocks or sticks to ease the feel over rough terrain underfoot. Road running shoes, on the other hand, don't require the same stiffness in the midsole but still need to protect the feet from the continual impact on the pavement. This is typically done by integrating softer cushioning or foams in the midsole. Some road running shoes include stability posts that are located on the sides of the shoes to help control excessive inward motion known as pronation. The last and probably most important difference between road shoes and trail shoes is the outsole. Like treads on a tire, the outsole of your shoe helps determine what kind of grip you will have on the surface you are running on. Trail shoes typically have deeper, more pronounced lugs on the outsole than road running shoes, providing more traction between your foot and the ground. The rubber on trail shoes is often designed to be stickier and is, therefore, less durable on the pavement. • Are trail running shoes suitable for hiking?

The short answer is yes! In most cases, trail running shoes are a great option for hikers. Compared to hiking boots, trail running shoes are going to be lighter in weight and more breathable, and they offer a range of traction options. On the other hand, hiking shoes are going to provide more stability, durability, foot, and ankle protection, and all-around good traction. The choice between trail running shoes or hiking shoes is a tricky one, as no one option will work for everyone. The best thing to do is look at the pros and cons and see what fits best for your personal needs.

  • Can you use trail running shoes on the road?

Though they are designed for off-road runs, trail shoes are generally okay to wear to run on roads or pavement. While road shoes might be a better choice if you plan to stay mainly on the pavement, trail shoes are typically versatile enough for a variety of road conditions.

Trail Running Shoes Road Running Shoes
Thick upper Breathable upper
Less flexible More flexible
Usually heavier Often lightweight
Protective overlay features Airy toe box
Gusseted tongue Various tongue styles
  • How should trail running shoes fit?
A trail shoe should fit snugly around the midfoot/arch area and provide a locked-down feeling in the heel to eliminate any lifting or shifting over uneven terrain. In the forefoot, make sure there is at least a thumb's-width of space between the tip of your toes and the end of the shoe.

A trail running shoe should be comfortable while not feeling sloppy or loose in the heel or midfoot. A perfect trail shoe fits across your foot—from width and length to the arch height and shape and your overall foot volume.
