ASICS Novablast 3

Price: $195.44-$239.95
ASICS Novablast 3. Black upper with orange ASICS logo and orange gradient in the midsole.

At the end of the day, the best shoe for each individual person is going to vary. There is no one brand/model/style that will work for everyone. However, there was one shoe that we’d venture to guess would perform extremely well for almost anyone looking for a running, walking, or gym shoe: the ASICS Novablast 3.

The Novablast 3 is a do-it-all neutral running shoe that has quickly become one of our best-selling shoes and one of the most popular shoes in the running world with no signs of slowing down. Our staff absolutely loves the versatility that the Novablast 3 brings. With its lightweight, cushioned construction, the ride is comfortable regardless of the activity. From nice walks in the neighbourhood with canine companions, to mile repeats on the track, to long easy runs on the weekends, the Novablast 3 performs magnificently in most any circumstance. Combine that level of performance with the fantastic starting price point of under $200 and it is no wonder why we consider the Novablast 3 one of the best overall running shoes.

Best All-Around Running Shoe

In this category, we’re zeroing in on shoes that we consider to be our everyday workhorse—the ones that we log most of our daily mileage in. Whether you feel like a quick 30 minute jog around town or you're training for a race and need to get in 20 miles, these shoes will help you get the job done in comfort.

HOKA Clifton 9

Price: $259.95
HOKA Clifton 9 running shoe. Upper is vibrant orange with a white HOKA logo in the heel. The midsole has a top layer of blue road and a bottom layer of white foam.

When it comes to reliable everyday comfort, the HOKA Clifton has been a model of consistency for years, and the 9th version carries on that legacy while adding an additional 3 mm of stack height. The HOKA Clifton 9 is highlighted by a fantastic weight-to-cushion ratio as well as its early-stage meta-rocker design, which allows for a smooth heel-to-toe transition as you rack up the miles. We certainly found the Clifton 9 to be versatile enough to walk in or take them to the gym, but where they really shine is in those daily easy miles and recovery miles. Most of our runs are of the easy variety, so it's imperative to have a go-to shoe like the Clifton 9 in the rotation. And at Running Warehouse Australia, they're in heavy rotation.

Honorable Mention: Saucony Ride 16

Price: $219.96
Saucony Ride 15 running shoe. Upper is green in colour with a pink Saucony logo. The midsole is white in colour.

Another top choice in the best all-around category is the Saucony Ride 16. The Ride may not be the flashiest or most innovative shoe on the market, but it has everything you would want in a daily running shoe. The PWRRUN midsole foam provides a moderate amount of cushioning that dampens the impact from landing while still allowing the runner to the feel the ground. With the rockered geometry of the shoe, our staff found the strides to be efficient at a variety of paces. Highlighting this shoe is the fit. The new upper on the Ride 16 offers a comfortable, breathable, and secure fit on a variety of foot types. We also appreciated the versatility of the Ride 16. Not only does it make for a fantastic everyday running companion, but it performs well at the gym, and feels nice and comfy on walks as well.

Best Max Cushion Running Shoe

Max cushioned shoes are ideal for runners and walkers who are willing to sacrifice a little bit of weight in order to get the most cushioned experience as they log their daily miles.

New Balance More v4

Price: $229.94
New Balance More v4 Running shoe. Upper is white with silver New Balance logo and the midsole is white with hits of peach and pink as a border at the top of the midsole foam.

The cushioned experience of this shoe certainly lives up to its name, the New Balance More v4. In this case, the more cushioning the better. This shoe may feel a bit heavy at first, but once you get going it is not as noticeable. Our staff could not get enough of the Fresh Foam midsole. Every stride felt protective yet incredibly soft. We view this shoe as the perfect choice for easy days, recovery miles and avid walkers looking for an ultra-cushioned underfoot feel. Expect your legs to feel better after your run than before. Seriously.

Best Performance Running Shoe

For speed and tempo workouts, you need a lightweight and fast shoe that is going to help you reach those breakneck speeds, but still offer enough support and protection to prevent injuries. Here are our picks that offer just the thing.

---

Saucony Endorphin Speed 3

Price: 259.95
Saucony Endorphin Speed 3. Upper is royal blue with orange Saucony logo and the midsole is royal blue.

Coming in hot in this category is a shoe that is not only going to satisfy your need for speed, but will also do so in style. Enter the Saucony Endorphin Speed 3. The Endorphin Speed has been a favourite of ours since it was first introduced a few years ago and our love has grown with each iteration. Highlighting this version is the added stack of one of our favourite midsole foams around, PWRRUN PB, and the redesigned nylon plate that utilises a winged geometry to improve the shoe’s stability. The PWRRUN PB foam midsole is as resilient as ever and really delivered the energetic and efficient ride we needed during hard efforts. And the added stabilisation provided by the winged geometry and FORMFIT upper made this shoe versatile enough to handle daily miles as well. But make no mistake, this is an uptempo shoe and one that we kept finding ourselves reaching for on those speed days. Chef’s kiss.

Honorable Mention: New Balance FuelCell Rebel v3

Price: $219.96
New Balance FuelCell Rebel v3 running shoe. Upper is white with black New Balance logo and the midsole is white with yellow and orange features.

Another shoe that deserves to be mentioned in this category is the New Balance FuellCell Rebel v3. This update was highly anticipated thanks to the massive success of the previous model, and we were not disappointed here at Running Warehouse! Once again, the soft and bouncy FuelCell midsole foam is the star of the show, and it continued to deliver an energetic and snappy ride for us no matter the distance. Like the Saucony Endorphin Speed 3, this is an uptempo shoe that is stable and comfortable enough to handle daily miles so feel free to lace these up on most days. We also have to highlight the fantastic price point of $220. For everything you get with this shoe, $220 is a steal and you’d be hard pressed to find another shoe at that price level that performs as well as the Rebel v3.

The full-length FLYTEFOAM BLAST PLUS foam in the midsole, continues to make the Nimbus more versatile than ever, and our staff found that it performed well in a variety of workouts. Long, easy efforts in the Nimbus 25 feel like being on cruise control—just let these shoes do the work while you enjoy the views.

Honorable Mention: Saucony Triumph 20

Price: $249.95
Saucony Triumph 20 running shoe. Upper is grey with neon green Saucony logo and midsole is teal blue.

The Saucony Triumph 20 is another fantastic everyday training shoe that offers plush comfort no matter the distance. The soft midsole compound, PWRRUN+ made easy miles feel truly easy and provided excellent protection on our joints. In addition to the comfort provided by the PWRRUN+ midsole, the Triumph can pick up the pace if needed. And expect these shoes to hold up well over time thanks to the durable outsole rubber. We hardly noticed any wear after approximately 100 miles in these shoes, which is always nice to see. Overall, the Saucony Triumph is an excellent option for those looking for a premium everyday trainer.

Best Budget-Friendly Running Shoe

We get it, $200+ running shoes aren't for everyone. Some runners just want a quality shoe to get the job done without breaking the bank. Don't worry, we've got you covered!

Saucony Axon 3

Price: $179.95
Saucony Axon 3 running shoe. Upper is blue with Saucony logo outlined in black. Midsole is white.

If you’re looking for a no frills every day running shoe that delivers a fun and comfortable ride, the Saucony Axon 3 is ready to answer the call. This shoe is built to handle daily miles, but is also capable of picking up the pace thanks to the SPEEDROLL geometry that keeps the legs moving efficiently. While not as soft as one would think given the high stack of PWRRUN foam in the midsole, the Axon 3 is still plenty comfortable for your easy runs under 10 miles.

Honorable Mention: Brooks Launch 9

Price: $199.95
Brooks Launch 9 running shoe. Upper is black with neon yellow and neon pink Brooks logo. Midsole is red and black.

The Brooks Launch 9 delivers a fun, albeit firmer, ride and will happily pick up the pace if you’re feeling frisky. ---

ASICS Gel Kayano 29

Price: $269.95 - $279.95
ASICS Gel Kayano 29 running shoe. Upper is navy and an orange outlined ASICS logo. The midsole is yellow and white.

Claiming the top spot in this category is the latest version of one of the most iconic running shoes on the market, the ASICS Gel Kayano. A daily training running shoe in the maximum stability category, the 29th version of the Kayano is sure to please the Kayano die-hards out there and primed to gain more followers thanks to the excellent updates in 2022. As you’ve seen in the other ASICS shoes in this list, this shoe is equipped with FLYTEFOAM BLAST PLUS foam in the midsole, giving the Kayano more bounce than we've seen in the past. While not as bouncy as you’d expect or want from a shoe built with FF BLAST+, it still delivered a comfortable ride from start to finish and easily handled all the miles we threw at it. Another highlight of this shoe is the LITETRUSS stability system that not only made our runs smoother than any other Kayano we’ve tried, but it also made the shoe lighter, which is always a welcome upgrade.

Honorable Mention: HOKA Arahi 6

Price: $249.95
HOKA Arahi 6 running shoe. Upper is blue with a pink HOKA logo. Midsole is blue and white.

Another fantastic stability option is the HOKA Arahi 6. Highlighting this shoe is the innovative J-shaped stability platform that cradles the foot and acts as a bumper to guide your foot without being intrusive. While we would not characterise this shoe as energetic or peppy, we were more than happy to enjoy the protective and smooth ride offered by the Arahi for miles on end. The Arahi 6 is also pretty lightweight for a stability shoe and at $250, it delivers fantastic value.

Honorable Mention: ASICS METASPEED Edge+/Sky+

Price: $329.96
ASICS METASPEED Edge+ running shoe. Upper is orange and blue and the midsole is orange and blue

ASICS has taken a unique approach to their super shoe offerings by dropping two elite marathon racers with the same technologies, but with slightly different geometries—one that caters to stride-style runners who can benefit from a carbon plate positioned closer to their foot to maximise foam compression and energy return (Sky+), and the other for cadence-style runners who benefit from a lower plate position that helps with stabilisation and a more efficient toe-off (Edge+). Both shoes are equipped with a high stack of the exceptionally resilient FLYTEFOAM Turbo foam that unlocks a truly magical on-foot experience. Furthermore, the high stack of FLYTEFOAM Turbo offers great protection while still being incredibly lightweight—a combination that is like music to a marathoner's ears.
